It resides in two folders: C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot2 Fixes suggested: deleting CatRoot2 (safe operation as it is re-created by Windows on next boot); manual cleanup in CatRoot (not safe to delete) and After moving the catalog files, attempt to install the Service Pack again. In my original attempt, I did not reboot prior to applying the service pack and it failed with an error message ("Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. You can also see this error if you try to manually install SP2 manually.
